The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a 2,174 mile long route along the Appalachian Mountains. It passes through Pennsylvania just north and west of Harrisburg (which is northwest of Lancaster County). The Trail follows ridgecrests and valleys of the Appalachian Mountains from Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia, and winds through Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia. The Appalachian Trail opened in 1937. In 1968 it was designated as the first National Scenic Trail.
