Nathan Detroit bets his pal, the slick, high-rolling Sky Masterson, that he can’t get the next lady he sees to fall in love with him. Unfortunately for Sky, it’s the prim and proper neighborhood missionary Sarah Brown who is out to save their very souls. And while Sky is wooing Miss Brown, Nathan has trouble of his own with Adelaide, the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she's been engaged to Nathan for 14 years.
