Gordon, the first person to drive 2 million miles in the same car (a 1966
Volvo; the feat earned him mention in the Guinness Book of World Records), suggests visiting America's small towns. Gordon, 61, a retired science teacher from
Long Island, says he has stopped at more than 5,000. "Get off the gridlocked interstates and head toward one
of our thousands of peaceful small towns," he says. "Each one is a jewel packed with bizarre attractions,
important history and plenty of fun." Here, Gordon shares his favorite stops with USA TODAY's Shawn Sell. Lancaster, Pa. The oldest inland city in the nation, with its 18th-century buildings and the Amish communities nearby, "makes you feel like you're in a historic movie. Tour the covered bridges as you enjoy the beautiful rolling hills and agricultural fields. And make sure you stop for some Pennsylvania Dutch cooking.".... |
